Big changes are coming to the potluck!

Starting this month, we will be changing our monthly meal from a lunch, held directly after church the first Sunday of every month, to a dinner, hosted in the homes our leaders the last Saturday of every month.

Why the change? Several reasons.

First, we’ve found that most young families are not able to stay for potluck after church. By the time church ends, at noon, young children and their parents are tired and anxious to get on with their Sunday.

Second, ever since our “Bigger Tables” experiment last spring, we have been discovering that deeper fellowship is only possible when we welcome each other into our homes and neighborhoods. This reminds me of a favorite scripture (Acts 2:43-47):

Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles. All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need. Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.

By making this change to our monthly meal, we hope to foster more of that deeper New Testament brand of fellowship.

Lastly, as you may know, San Diego County is currently experiencing a serious Hepatitis A outbreak, which has most significantly impacted the local homeless population. This is why we have been partnering with San Diego County to offer Hep A vaccinations lately. FCC is committed to serving the needs of the homeless, but most of those ministries revolve around food service, and unfortunately, food is the most common means of Hep A transmission.

Therefore, we have begun to increase our precautions and controls in some programs – like our Tuesday dinner and our Food pantry – while at the same time scaling back some of our other on-site food offerings – like Sunday morning snacks and, now, the potluck. By moving our monthly meal offsite, we hope to decrease everyones exposure to this serious health threat.

So when’s the party?

I’m glad you asked! Our first official “Bigger Table” church-wide dinner will be September 30th at 6 PM at the home of Carol and Tom Spears! As you may know, Carol is our head deacon, Tom is our Board moderator, and together they are a truly hospitable couple.

Please RSVP below and we’ll send you directions. There will be great food and great people! But if you can’t make it, no worries! We’ll be having the same party at a different home on the last Saturday of every month.
