A One-Of-Kind Place to Live, Work, and Lead

About First Christian Church

First Christian Church of Oceanside (FCC) has been faithfully servingthe heart of the city since 1875. We are an historic, growingcongregation with a passion for serving marginalized people and building a deeply-rooted and diverse local community of faith. Our church fed hungry people during the Great Depression, organized relief for military wives during the Vietnam war, and helped start a social services agency in the 1990’s. Today we continue that legacy by serving as a place of hospitality in the neighborhood for the good of the city. For us, the fullest expression of the gospel is to overcome divisions and help bring wholeness (shalom) to our community through faithfulness to the person, teachings, and work of Jesus Christ as revealed on the cross.

About Oceanside

We are located in downtown Oceanside, California, at the intersection of historic neighborhoods, low-income communities, a burgeoning Highway 101 business district, the downtown beaches, and City Hall. We are two blocks from Oceanside High School and in close proximity to Mira Costa College, Palomar College, and Cal State University San Marcos. Oceanside is currently experiencing rapid economic development, which means new businesses, restaurants, and housing development are attracting higher-income families. However, it also means struggling families, marginalized populations of color, and local homeless residents, are experiencing increased economic pressure and hardship. At FCC, we believe we are called to embody the gospel of wholeness in the midst of those local tensions.

Current Openings

This is an opportunity to create a forward-thinking incarnational youth and young-adult community from scratch in a church that is dedicated to serving our homeless and socio-economically marginalized neighbors.

Associate Pastor of Youth & College Ministries

We are ready for an Associate Pastor primarily responsible for building a healthy, socially-conscientious, disciple-making youth and young-adult ministry. Our older, traditional congregation is investing significant resources into equipping this new ministry to help our 141-year-old church transition into its next season of life. This is an opportunity to create a forward-thinking incarnational youth and young-adult community from scratch in a church that is dedicated to serving our homeless and socio-economically marginalized neighbors. In addition, the Associate Pastor will occasionally be called upon to fulfill other pastoral duties in partnership with the Senior Pastor, such as preaching at worship services, teaching classes, hospital visitation, and congregational care.

This is a part-time, 40% staff position (16 hours per week). We are committed to bivocational ministry as an expression of faithful incarnational mission. So it will be necessary for candidates to have a viable second vocation that immerses them in the local North San Diego County community beyond their ministry work.

Qualified candidates will have a demonstrated track record of faithful and effective ministry discipling youth and young adults in the way of Jesus, a passion for serving the poor, and an affinity for the core values and priorities of the Disciples of Christ (disciples.org); in particular, candidates should have a demonstrated passion for our value for Christian unity to be “A movement of wholeness in a fragmented world,” and our  priority for being a pro-reconciliation/anti-racism church.
